June 2020 Anyone who starts questioning why they're reading it, during the first few chapters (as I did), my advice is to stick with it. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness. Disabling it will result in some disabled or missing features. December 2018 I am still unsure as to how to redress this issue, I will try the audio book (as the whole bums rush to buy seems to impel me), but I still want to know what exactly I did 'wrong' to paint me into the corner. 3.5 Stars
The book itself is fabulous, and highlights some of the memes of the time that threaded through a number of different SF masterpieces. Several of my Goodreads friends happened to mention this book and it reminded me that it was one that I intended to get around to reading. You could have had all the monks be unimpeachably noble and godly men, while every scientist was an amoral villain, or you could have had the monks be hardheaded bigots and superstitious thugs while the scientists were valiant heroes just itching to advance humanity at the drop of a hat if only those annoying prats with the crucifixes and rosaries would get the hell out of the way. Excerpts July 2019 Miller avoids being just another didactic "message" writer by couching his themes in just plain great fiction. The book itself is a classic of Science Fiction but beware, the binding is a hard cover on a paperback book.

It wasn't really until those damn nuisances in the West — Copernicus, Galileo, Bruno, and more — started making findings that contradicted the church's received dogmas that science and religion developed their adversarial relationship.
I recommend it as a window into the view of a futurist from the 1950's who never published another novel in his lifetime, the follow-up from thirty-plus years later being a post-humous release facilitated by his children, which I also recommend "Saint Liebowitz and the Wild Horse Woman," if you're interested in learning more about the medieval dark ages and the cultures that inhabit this world described in the first book's second part. A Canticle for Leibowitz is a very highly regarded work of post-apocalyptic fiction. T And I found it impossible to reverse this process, costing me money I did not want to spend. Miller at one point alludes to an organization called the Christian Coalition, almost 40 years before there was a real one! Subsequent anti-science hysteria by the immediate survivors of the war resulted in the destruction of almost all antebellum scientific knowledge. There is little fear in seeing the mistakes of yesteryear repeated, as the texts — referred to as "the Memorabilia" — never leave their cellars and few people in the world outside the abbey and its mother church are even literate.
Every human being possesses a bit of both, and the effort to bring the good to the fore while keeping the bad neatly tucked out of the way is at the core of why we are so often in conflict. It is paperback sized and not printed on good paper. I decided to try it fifteen years later to see if age and education might have played a part in the novel's difficulty at the time and it did not. Faith in God, preserved by the Catholic Church, is the surviving thread that keeps people going. Funny, clever, downright disturbing and especially apposite in the current climate. November 2019 It's proselytizing in prose.
